Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is free, powerful and installed on millions of websites — but most small business owners either haven’t set it up or don’t know how to use it effectively. Here is the essential guide.
Why Every Bedford Business Needs Analytics
Without analytics, you’re running your online marketing blind. Analytics tells you: how many people visit your site, where they come from, which pages they visit, how long they stay, and whether they take the actions you want them to. This data is invaluable for making smart marketing decisions.
Setting Up GA4
Create a free account at analytics.google.com. Add the Google tag to your website (WordPress users can use the ‘Site Kit by Google’ plugin). Set up key conversion events: form submissions, phone clicks, WhatsApp clicks and any other actions that represent a potential customer contacting you.
The Metrics That Actually Matter
- Users: How many unique visitors in a period
- Sessions: How many visits (one user can have multiple sessions)
- Engagement rate: Percentage of sessions where users actually engaged (opposite of bounce rate)
- Average session duration: How long visitors stay
- Conversions: How many completed your desired actions
- Traffic sources: Where your visitors come from (organic, direct, social, referral)
What to Look for First
Check your traffic sources. If most traffic comes from ‘Direct’ and very little from ‘Organic Search’, your SEO needs work. If you have decent traffic but low conversions, your website’s conversion rate needs attention.
